what i read today: Berkshire Hathaway star followed Warren Buffett's advice: Read 500 pages a day (28 MAR 2018)

Todd Combs, an investment lieutenant at Berkshire Hathaway, got great advice the first time he encountered his current boss, Warren Buffett, in 2000, the year he started his MBA at Columbia Business School. The Oracle of Omaha was speaking to Combs and 165 other students during an investing class.
In response to a question about how to prepare for an investing career, Buffett told the students, "Read 500 pages like this every day," while reaching toward a stack of manuals and papers. "That's how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it."

what i read today: COLing the Shots (22 MAR 2018)

from COLing the Shots, COLFINANCIAL PHILIPPINES (22 Mar 2018):

"... if you are a long-term investor, resist the temptation to sell purely based on emotions. Even with the short-term challenges that the country is facing, we would like to assure you that the positive long-term outlook of the Philippine economy and the stock market remains intact due to the following reasons:

1. The Philippines continues to enjoy favorable demographics, resilient OFW remittances, and a growing BPO sector. In fact, for the month of January, OFW remittances grew by 9.7% to US$2.4 Bil, much faster than consensus growth forecast of 5.0%. The passage of the tax reform program recently will also allow the government to increase spending on infrastructure and social services, helping further boost productivity and economic growth.

2. The execution of the tax reform program has been very good so far, with the Department of Finance (DoF) disclosing that excise tax collections in January reached Php22.1 Bil, up 81.7% y/y and above the Php20.5 Bil target. The DoF also disclosed that the total tax collection of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for the first two months of the year grew 10.8% to Php280.6 Bil. Higher revenues reduce the risk that the government will not be able to execute on its plan of spending more on infrastructure projects and social services.

3. Despite rising inflation, most consumer companies we have talked to said that sales during the first few months of the year have been very good. Possible factors boosting consumer spending include higher disposable income due to personal income tax cuts (resulting from the passage of the tax reform program) and the favorable impact of the weaker peso on families dependent on OFW remittances.

In fact, if you are underinvested, we would like to reiterate that the ongoing correction is a good opportunity to increase your investment in the stock market. In our COLing the Shots report last month, we said there is a possibility that the ongoing correction will bottom at its current level of 7,900 to 8,100. This is based on the median drop of the seven major corrections that took place during the past 30 years. Moreover, 7,900 to 8,100 is a good level to start accumulating stocks fundamentally speaking as the PSEi would be trading at ~17.5X 2018E P/E. This is already slightly below its 5-year historical average P/E of 18X.

However, nobody knows for sure if the market will bottom at the said level. According to COL’s Chief Market Technician Juanis Barredo, after breaking 8,092, the PSEi’s next support is 7,788. Moreover, there have been times in the past when corrections have been as deep as 17% (implying a possible bottom of 7,500). Consequently, you may consider scaling in your purchases. For example, you can choose to buy stocks weekly from March to June, at any level below 8,100. This way, you can improve your average buying price assuming that prices continue to drop."

question and answer: from a reader in investagrams (10 MAR 2018)

i got a question from a blog reader in investagrams yesterday ...

question

Hi Good Evening, I have read your blog dated Aug 12, 2012 about my trading tactics. Hope you don't mind if I ask how do I know if the bottom has been reached already using Macd? or am i wrong with my understanding with your blog.
thank you.

my response:

hi @jxxxxx ... its been a while since i last visited that section of my blog and i have moved also since then ... my blog is still a blog in the making ... its being made and remade everyday ... so lets me make some refinements in my tactics ... i dont think i said that the macd is the reference point for determining the bottom (or did i?) ... the determination if the bottom has been reached is not in the macd ... its in the price itself ... AFTER the bottom has been reached .... since mine is a trend following system ... it just follows after prices have been closed at the end of the day ... which means the determination of the bottom is after the second (day) candle has been made ... which then means we can act on it only during the third day

dont hesitate to ask again for more questions ..

what i read today: Making sense of speculative stock hysteria (08 MAR 2018)

Speculative stocks tend to rise whenever the PSE index falls and when share prices of blue-chip stocks go up, speculative trading tends to become less active.
This inverse relationship has never been more negative lately when the market started to fall from a record high in January. The number of traded dormant stocks, mostly negatively correlated to PSEi, rose to 26 percent from 19 percent last year.

what i read today: Who are the PH Companies Eyeing to Launch the Country’s Third Telco Player? (07 MAR 2018)

Until late last year, a third telecommunications company player to compete with the so-called duopoly of PLDT and Globe Telecom seemed like wishful thinking, even if President Rodrigo Duterte set a March 2018 deadline for the new telco to be up and about.
But that changed this month when the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) released a memorandum circular detailing the draft regulations on the qualifications and selection of the new major player (NMP) in the telecommunications industry on February 19.

stok notes: "Edge" (04 MAR 2018)

Professional money managers like to cite four sources of “edge,” or potential for outperformance: information, through faster, better or more data; analysis, the ability to outthink other investors; behavior, or superior patience, independence and self-control; and structure, a business systematically organized to maximize all those edges.
